Can Cubase 5 run with digidesign 003 rack interface?

I have been running Cubase 5 with an M-Audio Mobile Pre interface with no problems. I recently purchased a Digidesign Rack 003 to be my new interface but I'm having issues with crackling noises during play-back. Does this mean that Cubase and Digidesign are incapatible? I can run Pro-Tools but would rather not because I'm extremely comfortable with Cubase.
