What was the purpose of the NATO alliance?

it was formed after world war 2 in an attempt at world peace, it is composed of several countries such as France, U.K., Canada, USA etc. to explain it in an easy sense, it is basically like a courthouse and all the nations are supreme court judges they all vote on world orders and things relating to war, peace or negotiations
